Cyiya Bourbon Washed
Cyiya Bourbon Washed
In Kinyarwanda, “Cyiya” is pronounced roughly:“CHEE-yah”/ˈtʃiː.ja/
Cyiya Bourbon Washed comes from the Cyiya Coffee Washing Station, set on Cyiya Hill in Rwanda’s Southern Province, an area shaped by rich volcanic soils and cooler highland temperatures. Coffee here is produced by a network of roughly 200 to 300 smallholder farmers, most of whom manage small, diversified farms that combine coffee with food crops and livestock.
The region’s naturally cool climate slows fermentation, allowing for greater control and precision during washing and drying. This extended timeline is a key factor behind Cyiya’s reputation for producing clean, well-structured coffees with strong clarity.
The station operates with a long-term view toward both quality and community resilience. In addition to seasonal employment and ongoing farmer training, Cyiya distributes coffee seedlings and shade trees at no cost to support farm renewal and environmental balance. Conservation efforts and wastewater management systems further reinforce a production model that values sustainability alongside cup performance.
