Aquiares Grand Peaberry
Aquiares Grand Peaberry
Aquiares Grand Peaberry is cultivated on the lush slopes of the Turrialba volcano. The name Aquiares means "land between rivers" in the Huetar language, and the farm is often called "Aquiares Coffee and Community." As the largest farm in Costa Rica, it is also home to 1,800 people, embodying community and sustainability.
Founded in 1890, Aquiares was transformed a century later by Alfonso Robelo, who fled Nicaragua's civil war. He built a thriving community by enabling workers to purchase their homes, fostering pride and stability.
Today, Alfonso’s son Diego manages Aquiares, focusing on specialty coffee, innovation, and sustainability. The farm emphasizes carbon neutrality and maintains protected biological corridors to support local wildlife.
The Aquiares Grand Peaberry is named for its relatively large peaberry bean size, compared to typical peaberries. Peaberries are unique because they develop as a single round seed inside the coffee cherry, rather than two flat seeds. This lot is mechanically washed and dried on raised beds in a solar dryer for 18 to 24 days, resulting in a clean, vibrant flavor profile.
