They're Seeds not Beans.

Coffee Isn’t a Bean—It’s a Seed!

Here’s a fun fact that might surprise you: coffee isn’t actually a bean at all. Instead, it’s the seed of a tropical fruit that grows on coffee trees in lush regions along the Equator. These fruits, commonly referred to as “cherries,” transform into a vibrant red color when they reach peak ripeness, signaling that the seeds inside are ready for harvesting.

Each coffee cherry typically houses two seeds, which, after processing and roasting, become the beloved “coffee beans” that fuel our mornings. The term “bean” is a bit of a misnomer, derived from the seeds’ resemblance to legumes. However, in reality, coffee seeds share a closer botanical connection to stone fruit pits, like those of cherries or peaches.

The journey from seed to cup is a meticulous process that involves several steps. Once harvested, the cherries go through either a dry or wet processing method to remove the outer fruit and reveal the seeds inside. These seeds, or “green coffee,” are then dried, sorted, and shipped to roasters around the world. The roasting process is where coffee develops its rich aromas and complex flavors, ranging from bright and fruity to deep and chocolatey, depending on the origin and roast profile. After roasting, the seeds are ground and brewed into the delicious beverage we all know and love.

Coffee is more than just a drink—it’s a global phenomenon that supports millions of farmers, baristas, and enthusiasts worldwide. From the high-altitude farms of Ethiopia to the volcanic soil of Costa Rica, each region and varietal imparts unique characteristics to its seeds, making coffee one of the most diverse beverages on the planet.

It’s incredible how something so small can hold so much power—power to energize, inspire, and bring people together. Just like these tiny seeds, we too have untapped potential waiting to be cultivated. As the saying goes, “Mighty things often have small beginnings.”

So, next time you take a sip of your favorite brew, remember the journey of this little seed—from a tropical cherry to the rich, aromatic cup in your hands. Cheers to coffee, the small but mighty force that keeps the world turning!
